    Italian Beginners Conversation

How do our online classes work

For our online classes, we are using a fabulous new video teaching tool (Zoom) that allows students to join and interact remotely. It even allows me to break the class into little breakout groups for conversation practice, allows me to go from group to group advising and assisting and then bring everyone back together just like in a regular class. The tool has a free app for whatever devices you prefer (phone, tablet, computer, laptop) that is simple to install and use (links and instructions provided). A few minutes before each lesson, you will receive a link for our class by email that will magically transport you to our virtual classroom (like teleportation in Star Trek).

    What makes them great

I wasn’t sure how well it would work before I tried it but now I love it and having taught all my classes using it for a couple of weeks, my students really love it to. Some have even said they prefer it to regular classes. And not just because of the social distancing, there are a number of other advantages that I hadn’t thought about either:

    • All the notes I write in class o the whiteboard (notes, new words, grammar references) are automatically saved by the program. You can see them in the app when I write them but I also email them to you after class as a reference.
    • No more missing out on what I or other students say because your too far away from them. You just turn up the volume. The sound and video are fantastic quality
    • I can share all the documents, grammar pages, newspapers and reference material directly so they just pop up on screen for you. I can also make notes on them directly and of course email them all to you after class
    • Sit in your favourite chair, have a cup of tea (or vino) and relax during class. And wear whatever you want. We learn best when we are comfortable
    • We can watch movies and other videos, play games directly through the app. We don’t even need to switch off the light
    • The App is free, no login or signup process, no technical ability required

    Pay what you can

    For our Fluency class students.
It is a difficult, sad and moving time for all of us. To keep our minds busy, enjoying learning in each others company is a way to keep up our relationship with others who have the same interest, have fun together and switch off for a while from our ‘Forced Isolation’. It’s great that many of us kept working, and others are receiving some government support, but some of us might be facing harder cut backs. In that case, pay what you can. To be together is more important and I wouldn’t like that some of you would miss out on taking part in these classes (and all that comes with them) because of financial restrictions. Just let me know. Grazie mille.

    Learn Italian in Cork

  • Why learn a language at a young age?

Italian leaving certI have been preparing students for their Junior and Leaving Cert in Cork for many years. Last year one of them told me something remarkably interesting, ‘I am very lucky Carolina (he  was talking to me in Italian, obviously) because I know many languages. I am not as stressed out as my classmates and I don’t have to work as hard as they do’. He took French (he is bilingual French/English), Italian (incredibly fluent and accurate), Spanish and Irish for his Leaving Cert and he passed it brilliantly.

Learning a language at a young age is effortless and bears much fruit for our children’s future. I see how easily our pupils learn grammar during our Saturday’s lessons in Piccolitalia. Learning Italian at a young age through games, songs and presentations is easy, fun, and ensures the Italian language for life (grammar, idioms and traditions included). This is a gift that our children will be able to use, not only in Italy, but also to get higher marks for their Junior Cert and Leaving Cert.

Our classes are on here in Blackrock and are held exclusively in Italian and are open to Italians and non-Italians.

We have two groups (for now). One for children with a little or no Italian (Gioca e Impara, Play and Learn) and the other for children who can understand, read and speak Italian or get by. I am very proud to say that 2 of our students in the Gruppo Scuola are coming from our previous group (Gioca e Impara), they don’t have any Italian relatives, their Italian grammar is amazing and they took their parents to Italy this year! Well done and well done to their mum who is helping at home. Please take a look at our Courses’ presentation, but remember that places are limited and we have very few left for our next academic year (starting on the 28th of September).

The Gioca e Impara group will be held every two weeks and it will be 1.5 hours long… plenty of time to learn, have fun and celebrate Natale (Christmas) and Befana… all in Italian!

    Learn Italian in Cork

  • 4 New Italian Classes in the College of Commerce

4 New Italian Classes are starting soon in the College of Commerce!

Italian Beginners, Italian Continuation, Italian Intermediate and Italian Intermediate Plus are starting at the beginning of October. Italian Intermediate Plus is a new format and a great opportunity for all students who want to refine and improve their Italian with the use of the Subjunctive. We will learn it step by step (a small step at the time) and we will have plenty of fun activities to consolidate and enjoy its use… tutto in italiano!

    • Italian Beginners

The beginners course is an interactive and engaging introduction to this beautiful language. Students are given a good grounding in the language through basic Italian grammar (e.g. definite and indefinite articles, prepositions, numbers, present tense, time), but more importantly they learn Italian through a communicative approach. In fact, students begin using the language right from the start using real life situations like greetings, talking about themselves and making a reservation at the restaurant.

    Night: Wednesday

    Time: 6.00-8.00pm

    Duration: 10 weeks

Commencement Date: Wednesday 2nd of October 2019

Course Fee: €120 or €110 for those who enrol online at https://vecweb.vecnet.ie/web_aeccorketb/webbook/webbookcourse.html?loccode=19A

    • Italian Continuation

Topics explored during the previous course are extended and students are continuously encouraged to speak in Italian. New vocabulary and grammar are immediately implemented in new situations such as bargaining at the market, talking about family, weather, holidays and so on. Writing skills are also developed to consolidate students newly learned sentence structures.

Grammar wise we aim to tackle the following topics:

    – Adjectives (primo e secondo tipo), possessive adjectives, demonstrative adjectives, (il mio cane, la mia macchina, quel bambino, quella bambina, il bel vestito, etc.)

    – La famiglia nouns and rules

    – Interrogative words

    – Verb piacere and few other irregular verbs

    – Prepositional articles (dello, nella, sul, etc.). We will implement them in new conversational tasks such as role playing in real life situations and listening activities.

    Suggested level

This course is advisable for those who already attended Italian Beginners and for those who are comfortable with the present tense (mangio, bevo, vado, regular verbs and some irregular ones), articles (il, lo, la, gli, etc.), prepositions (a Roma, in Italia, in bus, etc.), the time (che ore sono? Sono le 5), numbers and basic conversation (place an order at the restaurant, talk about themselves).

    Night Tuesday

    Time 6.00-8.00pm

    Duration 8 weeks

Commencement Date Tuesday 1st of October 2019

    * Social Welfare 30% reduction in tuition cost * Old Age Pension 50% reduction in tuition cost * Proof of SW and OAP to be included with application)

    • Italian Intermediate

“Parliamo Italiano” is the motto of this course, as we will alternate a grammar class (held in English) and a fluency class held completely in Italian with different topics and some listening (we will sometimes use a language room with headsets). Students will develop their language skills through discussion, exercises and role playing while new Italian idioms and expressions will help students to sound more Italian in conversation. Students will be using Italian scripts to ask when they don’t understand (cosa significa ________? Come si dice ________? Non ho capito, puoi ripetere per favore? Come si scrive ________?), therefore the flow won’t be interrupted… we want to think in Italian to be fluent!

Grammar wise we aim to tackle the following topics:

    – Il Partitivo (del/un po’/qualche)

    – L’Imperfetto (io mangiavo, io andavo a scuola)

    – Il Futuro (mangerò al ristorante domani, andrò a scuola l’anno prossimo)

    – Il Condizionale presente (vorrei un panino, mangerei un gelato)

    – Il Si Impersonale (si mangia bene in Italia, si vive bene in Irlanda)

    – Molto: aggettivo ed avverbio (ho molti amici, Maria mangia molto)

    Suggested level

Students should be comfortable with the present tense and the past tense (passato prossimo). They should have a good understanding of grammatical topics, such as masculine and feminine, articles (il, lo, la, I, gli, ecc.), prepositions and prepositional articles (di, a, da, della, dalla, agli and so on) and adjectives (la macchina è grande, il gatto è nero).

    Night Tuesday

    Time 8.00-9.30pm

    Duration 10 weeks

Commencement Date Tuesday 1st of October 2019

    • Intermediate Plus

A new welcoming format for all students from the Intermediate who would like to progress with Italian grammar and learn the subjunctive from scratch and with plenty of time for practice, to express ourselves in different, more refined and articulated ways. Lessons are in Italian and we will largely use ‘Cosa significa ________?’ and ‘Come si dice _________?’ when we need clarifications. It is a great opportunity to learn the subjunctive through baby steps with plenty of activities to enjoy it! Read the rest to see what you think… in italiano!

Allora, siete prontissimi?
